8-Bit Oracle FAQ
What is the 8-Bit Oracle?
The 8-Bit Oracle is a generative AI counselor built on Wilhelm translations, Harvard-Yenching references, and multi-advisor scenario analysis. It combines classical I-Ching interpretation with strategic, psychological, and systemic perspectives for self-reflection and decision-making. It is designed to complement, not replace, traditional I-Ching practices. Its primary goal is to spread awareness of the I-Ching's rich philosophical tradition and encourage individual exploration of the Book of Changes. Follows in the intellectual tradition of figures like Alan Watts, Terence McKenna, Aleister Crowley, and Carl Jung, who each explored unconventional ideas about consciousness, spirituality, and the human psyche. Some may view it as arts and entertainment, others may see it as a tool for reflection and mindfulness.
How does it work? Why don't you need my birthday?
The I-Ching, or Book of Changes, is an ancient Chinese divination system that doesn't require a birthday. Instead, it relies on the principle of synchronicity - the idea that the moment of divination is meaningfully related to the question at hand. Traditionally, yarrow stalks or coins are used to generate six lines, each either broken (yin) or unbroken (yang). These six lines form a hexagram. The I-Ching contains 64 hexagrams, each with its own meaning and interpretation. The 8-Bit Oracle uses random number generators and code to simulate the yarrow stalk divination process. This code is shared in our docs for those interested. Unlike some other divination methods, the I-Ching doesn't use personal information like birthdays. It's based on the idea that the universal principles represented by the hexagrams are applicable to any situation at any time. It's worth noting that there are several Chinese divination systems. While the I-Ching stands alone, some practitioners combine it with other methods for a more comprehensive reading. For example, BaZi (Four Pillars) and Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star Astrology) are systems that do use birth data. Some masters might use these in conjunction with I-Ching readings, but they are separate systems with their own methodologies. When a master combines these systems, they might use BaZi or Purple Star Astrology to gain insight into a person's general life patterns or personality, and then use the I-Ching for guidance on specific situations or questions. However, it's important to understand that the I-Ching itself is a complete system that can be used effectively without reference to birthdates or other divinatory methods. Its power lies in its ability to reflect the present moment and provide wisdom applicable to any situation.
How should I interact with the 8-Bit Oracle? How often should I ask it?
Some say to avoid yes/no questions and its better to ask how questions, but either style of question is valid. The divined hexagrams will be interpreted against any question you ask. However, by asking a yes/no question you limit the scope of interpretation the counselor can perform. You shouldn't repeat the same question within a short period of time, as this indicates to the I-Ching that you are not reflecting upon its counsel. There's a Polymarket side-panel with events you can click on if you need some inspiration. Feel free to turn off divination mode if you just want to chat without new hexagrams interpreted.

Usage guidelines for the I-Ching
Approach with wisdom and humility: The I-Ching is a profound tool that requires cultivation of wisdom to use effectively. The concept of 'junzi' (君子), or the 'superior person', emphasizes the importance of moral cultivation and ethical behavior in conjunction with seeking wisdom. Respect the practice: While the I-Ching doesn't judge questions as good or bad, it's considered poor etiquette to ask about things like the time of one's death. Approach the oracle with respect and meaningful intent. Open-mindedness: Be prepared for answers that may challenge your preconceptions or offer unexpected perspectives. The I-Ching often provides insights that require reflection and interpretation. Regular practice: Like any tool for personal growth and wisdom, the I-Ching becomes more valuable with consistent, thoughtful use. Regular consultation can help develop your intuition and understanding of its symbols and messages. Integration with other practices: While the I-Ching is complete on its own, it can be complementary to other forms of self-reflection, meditation, or personal development practices. Use it as part of a holistic approach to wisdom and growth.

Can I use the I-Ching if I'm Christian or follow another religion?
The I-Ching doesn't require adherence to any particular belief system. You can approach it as a philosophical text, a self-reflection tool, or a method for gaining new perspectives on life's questions. How you interpret and apply its wisdom is up to you, and can be in harmony with your own religious beliefs. The goal is to use the I-Ching in a way that enriches your life and aligns with your personal values and beliefs, while respecting its long history and cultural significance. The I-Ching can be approached by religious individuals as a source of wisdom complementary to their faith. Joachim Bouvet, a 17th-century Jesuit missionary and sinologist, exemplifies this perspective. In his research on the I-Ching, Bouvet sought connections between Chinese classics and the Bible. He concluded that ancient Chinese texts, including the I-Ching, contained truths aligned with Christian tradition. This "Figurist" interpretation suggests that religious people might view the I-Ching not as contradictory to their beliefs, but as an alternative expression of universal spiritual truths. However, it's worth noting that Bouvet's more extreme Figurist ideas weren't published until long after his lifetime, indicating that his views were considered controversial even in his own time.
