When there is hoarfrost underfoot, Solid ice is not far off.
Commentary
When you feel frost underfoot, solid ice is not far off. The first hoarfrost of autumn signals winter's approach. Signs of decay, scarcely noticeable at first, multiply until dissolution comes. But precautions can be taken—heed the first signs and check them in time.
