Gunship and the Synthwave Revival

Gunship (Dan Haigh, Alex Westaway), Synthwave Movement (2014)

In 2014, British duo Gunship (Dan Haigh and Alex Westaway) released their self-titled debut album—neon grid sunsets, VHS static, analog synthesizers rescued from 80s obscurity. Thirty years after the aesthetic died, it returned through artists who genuinely believed, not nostalgia merchants cashing in. The synthwave movement emerged organically: Kavinsky's 'Nightcall' in Drive (2011), Hotline Miami's brutal soundtrack (2012), Stranger Things' Moog-heavy score (2016). Thunder within the earth—energy renewing underground before breaking surface. Gunship built cinematic music videos (Tech Noir, Fly for Your Life), collaborated with John Carpenter himself, let the aesthetic speak without irony. Hexagram 24 is Return (復)—thunder below earth, one light line entering from beneath after darkness. The 80s never left; the pattern was dormant, waiting for the seventh day. What was banished returns naturally, cyclically, inevitably.

Practical Integration

Something you thought was dead is returning. Not through force, not through marketing budgets—it's emerging naturally because the pattern was never really gone. It was underground, waiting. Synthwave demonstrates the principle perfectly. In 2014, nobody asked for 80s aesthetics to return. The culture had moved on: grunge killed hair metal, minimalism replaced maximalism, irony became the default mode. But Gunship and artists like them didn't get the memo. They weren't being retro-ironic. They genuinely loved the aesthetic—neon grids, VHS static, analog synths, cyberpunk dreams. Thunder rumbling underground. Here's what the text knows that most trend-chasers miss: you can't force a return. You can only recognize when it's happening and nurture it carefully. Gunship didn't rush. They built cinematic music videos, collaborated with filmmakers (John Carpenter!), let the aesthetic speak. Drive (2011) planted the seed with Kavinsky's 'Nightcall.' Hotline Miami (2012) watered it with brutal gameplay and Miami bass. Stranger Things (2016) brought it mainstream. Each stage natural, cyclic, building momentum. The warning: the moment things start returning, your hustle-culture instinct screams "CAPITALIZE! SCALE! MONETIZE!" Wrong. The return is fragile at the beginning. Thunder is still underground. Movement must be strengthened by rest or it dissipates. Treat it tenderly. Don't force it. Let it flower naturally. The seven-day cycle: one sprint, one week, one complete revolution. Patterns cycle. Aesthetics cycle. What was pushed underground returns when conditions are right. If you're aware of this, you stop panicking when things decline (they'll return) and stop over-committing when they spike (they'll cycle again). Here's the key: return is natural, but you can miss it. If you're too committed to the current direction, if you refuse to see when patterns shift, you'll find yourself still pushing minimalism while everyone else is ascending into maximalist neon dreams. Don't be the last grunge band in 2001. Be the first to recognize when thunder breaks surface. The aesthetic that refuses to die has returned. It never really left. It was just waiting for the appointed time.

The Judgment

Return. Success. Going out and coming in without error. Friends come without blame. To and fro goes the way. On the seventh day comes return. Movement is cyclic; everything comes at appointed time. No need to force.

The Image

Thunder within the earth: the image of the Turning Point. Thus the kings of antiquity closed the passes at the time of solstice. Merchants and strangers did not go about, and the ruler did not travel through the provinces. Rest at the beginning allows energy to strengthen rather than dissipate.

Historical Context

Oracle Bone Script

Thunder (☳) below, Earth (☷) above—arousing movement underground, returning light after total darkness.

Period

Zhou Dynasty

Traditional Use

The classical text describes the winter solstice moment: after darkness pushes yang upward and out, the first yang line re-enters from below. Linked to the eleventh month (December-January) when light begins returning. The pattern is natural, cyclic, inevitable—but fragile at its beginning.

Character Analysis

The madeleine scene is this exactly: after years of linear time pushing the past further away (yin lines accumulating), a single sensory trigger (yang returning from below) collapses the distance. The return must be protected—Proust spent the next thirteen years writing 3,000 pages to capture what the madeleine unlocked.

Configuration

Lower Trigram

Energy State

Renewal beginning, light returning. Read bottom to top: one yang line entering below, five yin lines receptive above. The spark underground, not yet visible on the surface.

Trigram Symbolism

☷ Earth (Upper) - Receptive, nurturing, holding space ☳ Thunder (Lower) - Arousing, shock, sudden movement Thunder underground—the past awakening within, not yet breaking surface.
