Hexagram 40 Line 6: 上六

Xie Deliverance

Position: Line 6 (Upper Trigram)上六 Yin ⚋ (Broken)Register: blamelessFamous Line

Classical Chinese Text

上六 公用射隼于高墉之上。獲之无不利。

公用射隼于高墉之上

Wilhelm Translation

The prince shoots at a hawk on a high wall. He kills it. Everything serves to further.

Commentary

The prince shoots a hawk on a high wall. He kills it. Everything serves to further. A powerful inferior in an elevated position hinders deliverance, hardened in wickedness and resistant to inner influences. Forcible removal is required—first prepare the means within yourself, then bide your time, then act. Everything goes well.
