Hexagram 40 Line 2: 九二

Xie Deliverance

Position: Line 2 (Lower Trigram)九二 Yang ⚊ (Solid)Register: auspiciousFamous Line

Classical Chinese Text

九二 田獲三狐。得黃矢。貞吉。

田獲三狐。得黃矢

Wilhelm Translation

One kills three foxes in the field And receives a yellow arrow. Perseverance brings good fortune.

Commentary

Three foxes killed in the field, a yellow arrow received. Persistence brings good fortune. The foxes are designing flatterers who must be removed before deliverance is complete. But use the right weapons—directness and the golden mean, symbolized by the yellow arrow. Craftiness defeated by sincerity, not by more craftiness.
